CYBER RX
AUTOMATED PRESCRIPTION FORMULARY
 |
|
The growth of HMO drug preferences
has left physicians with a time-consuming and confusing path
to drug selection. For each HMO, a "formulary" must
be consulted to be sure the drug is approved for use with that
patient. The lack of uniformity of formularies created a need
for a hand-held device that contained all the formularies, and
rules for their use, with updates made automatically. This way,
the doctor would only need to learn one system and could be confident
that the formulary for each HMO was always current. A complete
desktop simulation of the hand-held product was created so it
could be demonstrated to HMOs, doctors, and investors. One novel
characteristic of this product was that it was possible to put
drug company ads on the device to remind doctors of the benefits
of one drug over another. This simulation led to formulary programs
used in high-volume hand-held PDA devices such as the Palm Pilot®. |
