AUDIO RIDER
AUDIO MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
Audio Rider was sold to cable television
stations to automatically control the sound volume of all programs
sent out over the cable to subscribers. Program volume was made
consistent from channel to channel and from program to commercial.
Unusually loud programs or commercials were significantly quieted,
and volume-too-low programs were made louder. In the middle range,
spoken conversation was made the same volume on all channels.
This product encompassed a significant
number of technical challenges essentially requiring a computer
to listen to cable television and decide if the "program
content" was intended to be soft, loud, or in between. Future
alternative uses for the fundamental algorithms and method of
FFT analysis of digitized sounds used in this product are being
evaluated for other applications.
